Beach Ratings Criteria
To provide a quick overview of each beach we have given them a star rating for a variety of categories.
The rating is from 1-star to 5-star. We have based the ratings on Phuket standards. For example if we say a beach is a 5-star snorkeling beach, we mean it is amongst the best in Phuket for snorkeling. We know there are better snorkeling locations elsewhere in the world but we are judging which beaches are best in Phuket.
Sand
Rating based on quality of sand on the beach. We look for fine, powdery sand without shingle.
Natural Beauty
Rating based on the natural beauty of the surrounds. Positive factors are trees and natural foliage, cleanliness, headlands and views. Negative factors include rubbish and development. For example, although Patong is a stunning beach in a beautiful bay we have to reduce the rating because of the high level of surrounding development.
Water Quality
Water quality is generally very good around Phuket. However there are beaches with waste water outlets into the sea and some beaches are not kept as clean as others. Rating based on water clarity, lack of pollution and cleanliness.Development
Whether you consider development to be a good or bad thing is up to you. We have based the rating on the amount of development around the beach such as restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and housing. The more development, the higher the mark.
Bathing
Rating based on how good the beach is for bathing. We are looking for a sandy seabed, steady slope into the sea and water quality.
Snorkeling
Rating based on how good the beach is for snorkeling. We are looking for corals, rocks, sea life, water depth and water clarity.
Activities
Again, it is up to you whether you consider activities to be a good or bad thing. We base the rating on how many beach & water activities are available, e.g. jet skis, banana boats, parasailing, kayaking or sports.
